Walk Smart
Children’s pedestrian safety program grades K-3, ages 5-9
Produced By Oregon Center for Applied Science ~ 2005
Walk Smart is a fun, interactive program that teaches students in grades K-3 or ages 5-9 how to be safe when walking near traffic. The program includes activities that give students a chance to practice important pedestrian safety skills (identifying dangerous vehicles, responding to traffic signals) in the safety of the computer environment. Research shows that once children learn these skills in the computer environment, they are more likely to understand how to behave in real traffic situations.
The Walk Smart program includes all the critical information children need to become safe pedestrians including…
  • where to walk
  • sidewalks, walking on roads without sidewalks, watching for cars at driveways
  • traffic signals
  • types of “wait” and “walk” signals and what they mean
  • watching for cars
  • how cars move at various types of intersections (e.g., traffic lights, stop signs, one-way streets)

Recommendations for users…

This program can be used by many audiences….
  • Ideal for schools, recreational programs and community associations interested in child safety
  • Great instructional tool for parents to use with their child at home.

This program can also be used by pediatric rehabilitation programs, special educators and parents with children who have brain injuries or other special needs. Clinicians and parents will be able to determine a child’s awareness and knowledge of pedestrian safety by using this program.
